Campsite licence

You must have planning permission before applying for a campsite licence.

You do not need a licence to run a campsite if:

  • the site is used for tents for fewer than 42 consecutive days or fewer than 60 days in any 12 month period
  • you are a member of an exempt organisation (such as Scouts) with a valid exemption certificate
  • the site is approved under a recognised camping exemption scheme
  • only members of an exempt organisation are staying on the site

If you plan to use caravans on the site, you may need a caravan site licence.

Licence conditions

We may attach conditions to a licence, including:

  • site layout and pitch arrangements
  • maximum number of tents or structures
  • required toilet and washing facilities

If you disagree with any conditions, you can appeal to the  magistrates court. Conditions may be reviewed or updated by us, usually after discussion with the site operator.

How to apply

Contact us for an application form or email DomesticTeamEH@eastcambs.gov.uk

You will need to submit supporting documents, such as a site plan showing boundaries, tent locations, and welfare facilities. There is no fee for a campsite licence. If we do not respond within one month, you may proceed with your plans.

Penalties

You may be fined if you operate without a licence and/or breach licence conditions. Serious or repeated breaches may result in the licence being revoked.
