Blue bins

Each household is entitled to one 240-litre blue lidded bin.

From 1 June 2026 you will be able to add soft plastics to your blue lidded bin.

These are things like bread bags, salad bags and film lids. There are a few exceptions like crisp packets and pet food pouches because they are usually made from a plastic and foil mix. We won’t take cling film either because it can get tangled in the sorting machinery. Please carry on recycling these items at your local supermarket.

If you have filled your recycling bin and still have more to recycle, you can put the extra by the side of your recycling bin. The collection crew will take it as long as they can tell its recycling, so put it in a cardboard box or a clear bag. If you regularly have extra recycling, you can ask for another recycling bin for free. Don’t forget to squash your bottles and cans to make more room.

For further information please see what can go into your blue bin.

Additional household recycling

From 1 June 2026 additional mixed recycling will be collected provided it is contained in a cardboard box, or ideally tied up clear plastic sack. This helps our crews make sure only recyclable items are collected.

Please note cardboard boxes will also be recycled and not returned. Large cardboard boxes can be flattened and lent against the side of the bin.

To encourage residents to recycle more, we will also be removing the charge for an additional household recycling bin. This means from 1 April 2026 you can request an additional blue bin free of charge.

We ask residents to only order a bin if they need it.  Our service is very busy preparing for the changes as well as delivering the existing services, and we must prioritise resources to deliver these only where there is a need.
