Open fires and woodburning stoves​

The popularity of open fires and wood-burning stoves has increased in recent years. However, the smoke generated by these can cause air pollution, nuisance and harm to human health.

If you use an open fire or wood-burning stove, or are thinking of getting one, please read the government advice from DEFRA (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs)

The DEFRA guidance shows how you can reduce the health and environmental impacts by:

• maximising efficiency so you burn less fuel
• reducing the risk of chimney fires
• reducing smoke and gases which can harm you or your neighbours
